 Artist Statement

Whether working in oil paint or acrylic, my work is a physical result of many years of studying techniques such as the Hudson River School, Traditional Chiaroscuro Techniques and Surrealism Fundamentals. My art is a result of my imagination and hours of contemplation.

Series:  A to Z-An Historical Survey of Women Artists. Using the Fruit of a Pear as a Metaphor

My awareness of the inequities that have historically plagued the recognition and accomplishments of women artists compelled me in 2001 to write a paper entitled “Women in Art History: A-Z”, as a part of my studies at Empire State College. This research resulted in brief biological sketches of 26 women artists (one for each letter of the alphabet) ranging from obscure creative talents such as Irish painter Sarah Purser (1848-1943) to one of the icons of the contemporary art world, Cindy Sherman (1954-). These women – from centuries past to the present – worked in nearly all media including painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and digital media, and enjoyed varying levels of recognition for their work.

My completed series of 26 paintings, created over a period of three years, was the result of my reflection on the notes and other documentation that I had gathered and allowing the work and life of each of these women artists to influence me and inspire an original still life painting. The works are linked by scale ( each 9 x 12 inches) and the subject matter (each contains a pear). Working with subliminal impulses and intuitive thoughts, I conceived a unique thematic and compositional solution for each referential painting. Inspiration for some came easily and others were perplexing visual challenges. While most are positive, there are some that appear filled with sorrow, pain and frustration, accurately echoing the life experiences of the individual artists.

Her work is enjoyed in  hundreds of private and corporate collections, in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan. Catalogs from her series: “A to Z: An Historical Survey of Women Artists” can be found in various research libraries including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.
