"First To Be Effective"

Mary Anderson ( 1866-1953)
Mary Anderson was an American rancher, real estate developer, and viticulturist who invented the first manual windshield wiper mechanism. She received a patent in 1903, but was unsuccessful in selling her invention. Her patent expired in 1920 and as the car industry grew, Anderson’s basic design become the standard equipment on the 1922 Cadillac. In 2011, she was inducted into the national inventors Hall of Fame. Painting an image of a rainy windshield on a gessoed Birchbox, I mounted a windshield wiper to complete the artwork.
